CNC Machine Shop Special Processes

At our machine shop, we have honed our in-house capabilities for critical material processing tasks over the past 50+ years.
Our special processes, including hardness and conductivity testing, priming, painting, fuel tank application, and aluminum heat treatment, are integral to our work on high-profile manufacturing projects such as the F-16, F-22, and F-35 programs. All these processes meet Lockheed Martin’s QCS-001 standards, ensuring the highest levels of quality and reliability.

Hardness and conductivity testing

Our hardness and conductivity testing services are essential for ensuring the integrity and performance of the materials used in our custom parts. Approved by Lockheed Martin, these tests are crucial for aerospace applications where precision and reliability in machined parts are paramount.

HARDNESS TESTING

This process involves measuring the resistance of a material to deformation. By assessing the hardness, we ensure that the material can withstand the stresses and demands of its intended application.

Conductivity testing is critical for aerospace components. We measure the electrical conductivity to verify that the parts can maintain proper electrical bonds when assembled. This ensures that all parts function correctly within the larger system.

Heat treating and aging

Our aluminum heat treatment services include solution heat treating and aging, transforming raw material into high-performance components suitable for demanding applications.

SOLUTION HEAT TREAT

This process begins by heating aluminum materials to a high temperature, altering their structure to a more workable state. Parts often warp during this stage, but we use precision tools and techniques to straighten them back to their original condition.

After solution heat treating, parts undergo an aging process. They are baked at specific temperatures for a set period, usually 12-16 hours, to achieve the desired hardness and durability. Some parts may start at a softer temper (T3) and undergo multiple aging stages to reach their final temper.

Priming, painting, and fuel tank application

Our in-house paint shop is equipped to handle a variety of coating processes that enhance the durability and appearance of our products.

Priming

Priming prepares the surface for painting by providing a base layer that improves paint adhesion and increases the longevity of the finish.

Painting

Our painting process adds an additional layer of protection to the parts. We use high-quality paints that meet military specifications, ensuring that our products can withstand harsh environments.

Fuel tank application

This specialized process involves applying coatings to fuel tanks to protect against corrosion and chemical damage, ensuring the safety and longevity of the components.

Specialized assembly processes

Our expertise extends to specialized assembly processes, particularly for the F-35 program, where we are approved to assemble nut plates using adhesives.

Nut plate assembly

Unlike the F-16, which uses rivets, the F-35 requires nut plates to be assembled with adhesives. This process demands thorough testing and precise application to ensure the highest standards of quality and reliability.

Fusion welder work

Fusion welding is another critical service we offer post-milling, meeting specific military and aerospace specifications. Our fusion welding process ensures strong, durable joints essential for structural integrity in high-performance applications.

Welding to specifications

Our fusion welding processes meet the stringent requirements of the MIL-W and DE specifications, ensuring that every weld is strong, precise, and reliable.
